Pistis Sophia

It is not any secret for those who are learned in theology that Gnosis, as hermetic knowledge, had its pre-Christian roots in the philosophies that were settled down in Syria, Mesopotamia, and obviously, in the doctrines of the Greek and Egyptian paganism, too.

We cannot ignore either the Gnostic principles that underlie in the theogonies of the pre-Columbian peoples of Central America and South America. In those theogonies there is also a Gnostic side that speaks about the exile of the soul -fallen down in the mistake- and its yearning for ascending the Heavens -the Aeons of the Gnostics.

However, there is no doubt that the relevance of the Pistis Sophia surpasses the other Gnostic texts that have been known by humanity in the field of the Christian theology.

Among all the documents that have increased the reputation of Gnosis -such as the apocryphal gospels, for example-, the Pistis Sophia acquires a transcendental importance due to the following fact: it comprises the highest expression of the Gnostic ideal, which is the complete liberation of the soul from all of the visible or invisible ties that imprison her in the wheel of life -or Samsara’s Wheel, according to the Hindus.

The Pistis Sophia -written originally in Coptic and later on translated into Greek- has been a relic that was venerated during millennia by the diverse Gnostic fraternities that have existed throughout history.

The literary argument of the Pistis Sophia is full of cosmogonic, anthropological and theological indications that are directed to reach the pardon of the soul by means of the self-application of a purifier punishment. All of this is widely commented and developed in the Gnostic treatises written by V.M. Samael Aun Weor. According to him, only by means of voluntary sufferings and conscious sacrifices can we disintegrate the chains that imprison our psychic material, and thus recover the light that we have lost along the centuries and millennia.

Jesus, Maria and Disciples

The Pistis Sophia contains the speeches given by the Great Kabir, Jesus, to his apostles during eleven years after the Resurrection. That is the reason why the Pistis Sophia was the Bible par excellence of the Gnostics, and that is the reason why it is said -with good sense- that no other book describes the thought of the Nazarene and the aims of his doctrine so brightly.

It is remarkable that the book is written in form of dialogues. The book is a dialogue between the soul -which is sank in the sin- and the Divine Redeemer, as supreme representative of the Regions of Light. By means of this dialogue, Pistis Sophia cries for aid to leave her spiritual poverty, and the Nazarene answers her supplications, indicating the reason of the Sophia’s fall and the experience that she has acquired from the wisdom of sin.

For the followers of the eternal Gnosis, the soul or psychic material that is contained in the human being, suffered a spiritual fall provoked by a false God or Creator-Demiurge. This fall caused in Pistis Sophía (the human soul) a distortion in her original structure and, sequentially, the appearance of the psychic aggregates or demons, which have tormented and imprisoned her since then, to such an extent that she was removed from her divine abode and was cast out into the lowest Aeons or Chaos of religions.

The mission of the texts that make up the Pistis Sophia is no other than telling about the origin of soul and the misfortune resulting from being enclosed in the matter, and besides, the texts explain the way the soul can leave its wretched condition, by means of the practice of divine methods, in order to re-conquer the lost Heavens or Aeons.

Unquestionably, the language of the Pistis Sophia is eminently parabolical and full of metaphors. It is the same style used by the communities that existed in the pre-Christian times and at the time in which Jesus was in the Holy Land. This fact (its parabolic style) determined that the Pistis Sophia has been the most misunderstood Gnostic text by the exegetes of all the times. And this fact has also avoided any alteration of its content.

This was probably the reason of a prophecy that emphatically stated the following thing: «Only someone who has incarnated the Christic principles in his/her spiritual nature will be able to understand, comprehend and unveil the meaning of the Pistis Sophia»...

It was necessary that centuries and millennia have gone by, so that, finally, in the 20th century, an true Master, representative of a race of Solar Initiates, have appeared before the solemn verdict of the public consciousness in order to unveil, with all luxury of details, this sacred work and the keys of the human redemption.

This great Being, who has come from the Heights for our good, was the Venerable Master Samael Aun Weor, Avatar of Avalokitesvara for this new Age of Aquarius that is developing among the august thundering of thought.

The Nazarene (Jesus) dictated the body of doctrine contained in the Pistis Sophia to his apostles by word of mouth, and they, the apostles, wrote his words with devotion, thus making up the chapters of this great work.

However, it is written that for the common humankind, the Pistis Sophia, in its original state, is like a mute book, since the meaning of the text is totally enigmatic. Nevertheless, thanks to the interpretation done by the V.M Samael Aun Weor, the Pistis Sophia has turned into the exact guide that can get the human being out from the labyrinth of confusions in which he normally finds, and thus the human being will be able to return to the divine status that he possessed in the beginning, according to the Hebraic Genesis.

Therefore, the Pistis Sophia is the bearer of the lost inheritance that belongs to all of us. Inheritance that we can recover again by means of the didactic and dialectical methods of the contemporary Gnosis delivered to the humanity of these times by the illustrious Master Samael Aun Weor.

The Pistis Sophia is attributed to Basil Valentine, eminent and brave seeker of truth, who had the courage of rebelling against the pontifical dogmas of the catholic Church, which, at those times (first and second centuries of our Era), was already beginning to establish its ecclesiastic orthodoxy in order to eradicate the authentic primitive Christians who had embraced the Gnosis delivered by Jesus.

Many theologians do not hesitate to affirm that: “During the second half of the second century and the beginning of the third one, Valentine's doctrine was the most powerful and serious doctrine among the dissidents of the Church, producing even most literature than the Church itself”.

The history of religions should pay a posthumous homage to Valentine for having condensed, in a very scrupulous manner, the Path to return towards the ocean of the great light, allowing the human beings of this human anthill that populates the surface of the Earth, now, in the 21st century, to self-realise within them the communion of that which is called GRACE and TRUTH.

The popular proverb has always said: «The greater the illness, the bigger the pill»; and in these current times in which humanity lives a huge wave of manifested apostasy, this monumental work, the Pistis Sophia, comes to fulfil a sacred mission, once it has been deciphered by the enlightenment of a truly Christified man called Samael Aun Weor…

The Gnosis of master Samael says that today more than ever are we before the dilemma of the TO BE OR NOT TO BE. As a consequence, it is going to happen something that had not happened before in the human race: a self-selection that will divide the dwellers of our orb into two different categories: on one side, the eagles; on the other, the reptiles. On one side, the angels; on the other, the demons...

We ask you, dear reader, one question: whose side do you want to be on? Kabbalah can help you by means of the following axiom: «Take the shield of your faith and go forward with a firm step, be it with a favourable wind or against all winds»...
